A new form of propulsion has the military excited. But why do they need an expert in ritual magic on board their new flagship spacecraft? And why do they need an exorcist? It is soon apparent they are meddling with forces they don't understand. But can they be controlled?

A Lovecraftian short story.

When the Stars Are Right eBook William Meikle

This is the second freebie I picked up that was written by William Meikle. The first one - a novella entitled DEAL OR NO DEAL was a really solid hardboiled detective cracking a supernatural crime, and I really enjoyed it.

This one worried me though. By the first page I was pretty certain I was reading a Robert Heinlein style short story.

"Oh gosh," I thought to myself. "I don't really dig science fiction. I used to but not anymore. Oh well. It's short enough. I might as well finish reading it.

And I kept on reading with all of the gusto of a eight year old kid grimly chewing down his brussel sprouts so that he can get to the chocolate pudding for dessert.

But then he threw in demon-summoning.

And Chthulhu.

Not to mention the freaking GHOSTBUSTERS!!!

All of a sudden those brussel sprouts started to taste like they were covered in chocolate sauce.

So - if you are interested in a short story that reads like an HP Lovecraft meets Robert Heinlein lovechild, then you really ought to give this short little yarn a shot.

When the Stars Are Right eBook William Meikle Reviews

Lovecraft, demons and space travel make a strange but entertaining mix in this story. Of course those in power ignore all warnings. I noticed in my law enforcement career that there must be something about having power which tends to destroy common sense.
The book captured the haunting feeling of a Cathulu story. It also was written in a Lovecraftian way. However, there wasn't as much suspense and horror experienced through the main protagonist or the theme of madness that is present in many Lovecraft tales. I think I would have preferred something with a more powerful emotional draw with greater characterization.
Still an intriguing read.
This short story gave me the willies. My heart was thumping a mile a minute. I don't do well with demon stuff, summoning spirits or invoking spells. It's just scary to me. If it's also scary for you, then get this story. Yep, I'd recommend this story and author.
The military is agog over a new form of energy, and plan to use it for space ship propulsion. But, why do they need an exorcist aboard the ship as it prepares for its maiden voyage?
Read William Meikle’s short story, When the Stars are Right, and find out. A chilling story of adventure and paranormal phenomena that involves religion, politics, power plays, and ritual magic that sneaks up on you before you know what hit you.
Meikle’s story has only one flaw in my opinion—it ended too soon. I was just getting into it when his ending, though excellently crafted, came at me out of the blue.
Delightful!
Not, perhaps the first term one might expect in a review of a Lovecraftian tale, but then, perhaps I am not a "usual" reader. I truly enjoy much of Lovecraft's work, despite having a great aversion to his personal beliefs, which I find appalling, and frequently disagreeing with him on what is terrible vs what is marvelous or wonderful (case in point The Shadow out of Time).
Happily, this work - all too short, IMO, has none of those taints, has an inherent humor, yet also that chilly touch of dread and foreboding I look for in a Lovecraftian tale. I am happy to have discovered this author and will now be on the lookout for my next acquisition!
I really liked this short story, I recently discovered Lovecraft and this fits into that world extremely well. Makes you think and actually builds a bridge from our reality to the Lovecraft world and makes the stories written by Lovecraft possible in our "real world". I can't say more without spoiling the story. For you Lovecraft fans you will understand what I mean once you read this. I think Mr. Meikle also helps those that are currently writing in the Lovecraft Mythos but providing a stage for the strange Lovecraft world in our present day high tech world.
.
The story had a somewhat interesting idea behind it. What if summoning supernatural beings like ghosts and demons could be used to power spacecraft. But the style it’s written in, someone talking into a camera for a video diary, but in a way that nobody really speaks, just turns it to crap.
That’s without mentioning how it’s filled with editorial errors like the year it take place changing from first to second “chapter”. Past and present tense being used interchangeably, etc.
I know this author can do better, what went wrong?
